Bill McPeak Defensive End

The National Football League has been proud to include in its ranks through the years outstanding coaches and players graduated from The University of Pittsburgh.

Bill McPeak is the first Panther graduated to be entrusted with coaching duties while still active as a player. The smiling Irishman has achieved this singular honour because he is more than just a sturdy defensive wingman. In seven years as a pro, McPeak has proven an ardent student of the gridiron sport. Coupled with his above average intelligence, this keen interest made Bill a logical choice for a coaching spot.

Following his years as an All- American end at the Sky Scraper University, McPeak was drafted and later cut by the Cleveland Browns. Coach Paul Brown has referred to McPeak's release as, "'My biggest mistake as a coach in the Pro League." Perhaps the release also explains why Bill has been most effective against the Browns.

A Cleveland reporter reviewing the 55-27 Steelers win over the Browns in 1954 wrote, "The Steeler right end, McPeak, spent more time in the Browns’ backfield than most of the Cleveland halfbacks."

Bill's intense desire to win has marked his play since he joined the club in 1947. Nobody is more critical of player McPeak's performances than coach McPeak.

When not engaged in gridiron chores The Steelers' defensive captain is employed by a Pittsburgh Tire Concern.

Although he possesses the essentials necessary for success in business, it is assumed that most of McPeak's future will be spent teaching the Pigskin Fundamentals. He has learned so well himself.
